Tarp/tent ideas

Hello all: Will be at NESBA NJMP Thunderbolt this Friday and it's gonna be hot. What type tarps do you recommend as good deal to keep the sun off during the day. Checked out BJ's Warehouse today and they had a $200 10x10 tent with roll-down sides ( i think from what i could tell from the box). Was like 50 lbs. Seems like overkill. Next version was a beach-tyle lean-to that would fit a couple of lawn chairs for $30. Seems like under-kill. Was looking to get a basic nylon tarp type cover for the day. Thanks of info and look forward to meeting you all there.

I was at the track 2 weekends ago where there a constant, but 15-20 mph wind. Nothing exceptional, but when that wind beats on the same side of the frame on the cheap shelters, such as mine and several other people, you either have to take it down or it gets busted. Several got trashed.
I was parked down the row from a guy who had a shelter that didn't even move.

It was an E-Z UP. I didn't see the model, but the big difference I saw was that additional frame that runs from

the middle of both sides (shown in red below). My cheap one just has a perimeter frame and the framing on top that pops the top up.

Mine bent before I got it down, but I'll make sure my next one has those additional frame sections.

I've always thought that EZups were overpriced for what you get. The tops on the $250 models are only 200 denier. The way that EZup ties the top directly to the canopy frame at a rigid connection (screws directly into frame) causes the top to sag very quickly.

I like a Caravan canopy. 500-600 denier top. It has elastic bands to help keep top tight instead of tying directly to frame. The frame design is also very similar (almost identical) to a Northstar, which is a well designed frame. And the Caravan is about $250.

I had a Quick Shade and it broke in light wind. Problem is, any of the brands, EZ-Up included, will buckle under moderate wind and rain. I have the EZ-Up Express II now. It has the cross braces that finny mentioned, another feature I now look for. I found the best price for the Express II at Cabeles: http://www.cabelas.com/product/E-Z-Up174-Express-II8482-Canopy/734778.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Dez%2Bup%26x%3D0%26y%3D0%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%2BProducts&Ntt=ez+up&WTz_l=Header%3BSearch-All+Products

Sears and some others have good prices as well.

The most important thing about any canopy is staking it down properly. Even if it seems there is no wind. You do somewhat get what you pay for, but with proper care almost any brand will last. Of course it depends on how much you use it.

That said, you can't go wrong with that Express II from Cabelas. $159 is a good price.

Also, IMO sides (at least 1) are a necessity. You can get a regular tarp and use bungees to secure it to your canopy.

Oh yeah, gotta tie it down for the safety of you and others around you. All four corners. It sucks when someone doesn't secure theirs and it blows into someone else's vehicle.

One thing to consider (for me anyway) is that the Eclipse II has those crossmember which are good for stablility, but not so good if you want to lower the canopy over the bike like at night.

I like to lower my canopy all the way down at night, over my bike that I also place a tarp on. I do this also when it rains during the day and I want to keep me and my bike dry.

+1 on the Caravan model. I bought the Displayshade model from Amazon. It is big and heavy with a steel frame and has the 500D top. Folded it is still 5' long and weighs in at about 50lbs which is a complaint by some. I got it for under $200 but they are going for $265 now. For that I may just take my chances and a couple of $120 ones. I also have one from Harbor Freight that I bought several years ago for about $100. The top ripped the first year BUT with a little duck tape I was able to get several years out of it and still keep it for an extra. Whatever you get I would recommend you get one with the straight legs.

Thanks everyone for your ideas and feedback on tarps. Some good info and much appreciated. That seems to be a great deal EZ Up II via Cabelas. I'll be ordering that one but of course wont be here in time for tomorrow's track day. Live and learn (and probably sun-burn). Have another track day late July so should be put to good use. Cheers,
