I'll be travelling from the Raleigh NC area to NJMP on Tuesday thru the DC area. I have a route from Mapquest that takes me thru the DC area, looking for some suggestions or area's of concerns to avoid ie: traffic issues, construction, what times to avoid going thru the DC area, toll roads that kind of nonsense. Thanks.

unfortunately there's no safe bet going through the DC area to avoid traffic but 95 north from Fredericksburg to DC is often a parking lot so you could take this route to avoid that and the DC beltway which is hit or miss, you'll just have traffic lights to deal with... https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Raleigh,+NC&daddr=38.62633,-76.91057+to:Millville,+NJ&hl=en&ll=37.775057,-76.992187&spn=4.050552,8.031006&sll=37.696861,-76.90979&sspn=4.054829,8.031006&geocode=FcDWIQId6hFQ-yn34FGfL1qsiTGt8BGKUraQZw%3BFRpkTQIdFnBq-ylLTF27KaG3iTHSIOhaOCUxmg%3BFUw6WQIdkP2G-ykNoO5bJTTHiTFApf4vvYdCWg&oq=millville&mra=mrv&t=m&z=8&via=1

Here's my 2 cents..I use this myself to circumvent DC as much as possible when I head south.
First time down to VIR in 2001 I spent 5 hours in the NOVA mess on a Friday...and never doing that again.

I would minimize your time around the DC Beltway...come up 81 or 29 through VA, then hit 66 East.
Then you'll get on the 495 Beltway towards Baltimore for a couple of exits to 29 into Maryland.
MD29 North until you reach MD100 East through Columbia, MD which will put you back on 95 North.

Baltimore's not as bad once you get through the Fort McHenry Tunnel toll bottleneck.

Also want to pick your time of day to make this run..doing it where you're going to hit DC/Baltmore during morning, or evening rush hours is not going to help no matter what route you take.

I'm gonna hit 301, I'm good with consistent speeds and it appears the food is better along that route, according to some Golf nerds :D Thanks to all!

+1 for 50/301, MUCH easier, relaxing ride. Depending on when you leave, you just don't want to be at the bay bridge toll plaza on a Friday afternoon (everyone heading towards the eastern shore). That aside, there will be next to no cars on 301. Head into Middletown, cut across to Route 1N to Christiana, then 95N over the Delaware.
