Laguna Seca - The Pass

What is illegal and legal in motoGP? As completely awesome as it is to see Rossi pass on the inside of the pavement, why isn't it illegal?

I don't know much about the rules of MotoGP, so please feel free to enlighten.

I don't know about GP specifically, but in the World championships you can cut the course as long as you don't improve your position/order. Now, how specific is that? For example, how badly do you have to "cut the course" - a knee in the dirt, a tire in the dirt, two tires in the dirt, etc, etc....I don't know. It is generally referred to when someone blows a corner and has to re-merge into the race.

I believe the rule is the same for GP.
The pass wasnt illegal simply because he was already ahead of stoner when he run ver the sand, he just was forced to do so to maintain the lead, because of the tight cut, but he didnt pass by cutting across the sand.
