Short answer: Yes.

Elaborated answer: They aren't "race" numbers. Think of them more as an identifier for the corner workers (flag waivers) around the track. It's much easier to manage 20+ bikes on track with numbers. The biggest use for the numbers is so that at the end of the session the corner workers can talk to one another to ensure all bikes are off track before rolling out the next group. For example, the first corner worker might say "bike #37, last bike cleared track". Then the second corner worker announces when #37 goes by, all the way until the last corner worker station. Then the grid marshall (who handles bikes going on/off track) can say "All bikes cleared, rolling out next group..."

There is a TON of work that goes on "behind the scenes" and making sure you have easily read numbers (things get blurry at 100+ MPH...) is absolutely needed. As long as the color of the numbers themselves is a good contrast from the background color, you'll be good to go!
