BHF and a heart rate moniter

I thought I would try something at the NESBA Chili cook off track day on Sunday. I brought along my Forerunner 305 GPS with heart rate monitor. I did not want to destroy the thing, so I monitor the watch to the triple tree and had the heart rate monitor on the skin under the Under Amour shirt. I could feel the heart rate monitor when up against the gas tank every time.

Now to the results on the testing. Well I was expecting the heart rate to be a little higher both in a max and over all average. Let just say the numbers are lower than I thought and I scared myself at least a few times a session.

Well pedaling a road bike you are working your legs, moving against the elements and terrain, so you would expect the heart rate to be high. The heart rate while pedaling has an average range between 108-122 bpm (beats per minute) and a max heart rate 136-162 bpm. Now that is pedaling and working.

I would have guessed the heart rate to be having a higher overall average then it did while riding a motorcycle at speeds, just from the adrenaline factor alone. Well in the five sessions that I recorded, I had an average heart rate of just 106 and a maximum heart rate of 121. That is it 121 bpm and even scared myself at least a few times in the day? I guess I didn’t do a good job scaring myself and should have went for the track record then as I was riding in the 1:22 range most of the day, with a best of 1:20 something. I did have a max speed of a 146 with a range of 120 – 132 most likely going up the front straight.

Below is the date from today’s events. From the looks of the GPS, mapping it looks as if I was mowing some grass, but I can assure you that I never once made it off the pavement. As I am typing this summary, I have a heart rate of 52 bpm and I have not had a drink yet.

Anyone else have data to compare with and can share?

haha thats pretty cool. I like the display of speed vs. distance. You could see a pattern and how many laps you did. The map isnt accurate so it looks like you were mowing ALL the grass lol

bout the heart rate-I have wondered this myself. I think i might try it. But if you were riding and scared yourself to the point where your heart was pounding...yesh, thats when I hot pit for a moment.

I run one as well. I just have the wrist watch variety with the chest strap. It doesn't always pick up while the bike is running, but when it has I've seen as high as 167 on track. Usually I'm around 130 or so on track when I'm not pushing.

One of the movies that follows the MotoGP guys for a season (Faster, or the sequel:The Doctor, the Tornado, and the Kentucky Kid), they interview Dr. Costa about the riders. They use telemetry on the riders while on the track, and apparently, most of the riders at that level see a very high increase in heart rate - equal, if I recall, to an incredibly strenuous workout, or high-threat event. Except Rossi, who's numbers are only slightly elevated.

My theory is that some guys just see speed differently than the rest of us-they slow it down in their perception. I believe this is why they are fast in more than one sport - they just understand speed in a different way.
