front brake rotors - years / models issue

Is there a way to go about finding if one part from one year fits another year bike?

I am trying to find some front brake rotors for my 2001 R6. I have come across a 2002 R1 set, an 07 front wheel with front brake rotors. I called our local Yamaha dealer and got two different part numbers for an 2002 R1 and a 2001 R6. The guy basically said there isn't a way to find out, even Yamaha won't know.

What can I do? Can I only rely on someone else's experience? Does anyone have experience with this problem? Is there somewhere I can get dimensions to check the parts out?

What I've done is go to the bikebandit website and compare part numbers off the online microfiche.
Obviously if they're the same on different bikes and/or years, they'll fit.
I was surprised how many parts recent zx6s use from older zx10s.
