Are bikes like this good ideas for just track day riders that want a nice machine? Or more specifically, do race built motors hold up ok over time or are the maintenance costs a bit higher?

the motor is the only thing that would require more attention than normal. Any bike that sees the track should have regular brake fluid/suspension/oil maintanence anyway.

A "safe" race motor will last 1500-2k miles. Less the more it is built.

The maintenance cost would be around the same as a bone stock gsxr600. The costs incurred are based more on how a bike is ridden. Now if it was a superbike and not a supersport type build that would be more costly.

OK. Thanks. I've always just wondered about these bikes that I see now and then for sale. I'd love to have a really well built 600 someday soon but was unsure if the motors are tuned to the point of premature wear and tear to get that extra grunt out of them. GLWS
