I'm hoping its like the R1 vs R1s where they put a little more into the engine. Or it might be a little like the mt07 vs the R7 where they gave it a whole new front end and other bits. Either way, it'll be interesting to see how the bike performs.

"[UPDATE: The R9 has received CARB certification as a 2025 model. It shares the same certification as the MT-09 and MT-09 SP, suggesting no changes to the engine and exhaust. The certifications also confirm three color codes: Blue, Black, and White.]"

I got into bikes just when Honda went crazy with the 750. I was in college and couldn't afford sh*t but one of my frat brothers had one. It was out of this world cool compared to the sportsters and such. IT HAD A DISC BRAKE!!! Went through all the cool stuff once I could start to afford bikes. V45 Sabre, FJ's, CBX, RZ350, first gen R1. Things are certainly different now, seems like there's rarely a totally new concept with Ducatis perhaps the exception.
Kinda of like what's going on with regular cars. All basically the same and even look the same. I miss the days when you could easily differentiate a car from 50 yards away. Stream lining be damned, I want a '63 bullet Thunderbird convertible!

I imagine it's going to be something like an R6 with the CP3 engine in it.

I think Ten Kate Racing’s developments this year (already in heavy development in February) coupled with the R9 replacing the R6 in WorldSBK’s SSP class in 2025 (to compete against Ducati, Triumph and MV) is going to drive a bunch of improvements such that it’s not just a dressed up MT-09.

Improvements after the factory team does every possible thing allowed by the SSP rules or improvements to the production version?

That’s an excellent question that’s making me think.

I probably should’ve used the word “development of options” rather than “improvements”.

As a lowly track day junkie, I’m just thinking about the trickle down technology, modifications and accessories that’ll become available to the commoner like me.

IOW, we know Ten Kate Racing was given first dibs on prototyping and they’ve probably done a bang-up helping build out the GYTR parts list. However, they’re just the first in line and other companies in DEU, ITA, ESP, AUS and JPN will get their turn (if they haven’t already).

Would be super cool if Yamaha had a GTYR R9 ready at the launch. A real statement of intent.

R9 is still kind of a realistic dream bike of mine, but after dealing with some local dealers I'm gonna wait until they're used. I know it's the old cliche. But I guarantee dealers are gonna turn a $13-15K bike into a $20K+ bike OTD. No thanks

How is a bike you know almost nothing about a dream bike?

That Ten Kate Racing has been developing all the race bits since early this year AND that the R9 is slated for WSBK’s SSP class tells me Yamaha has already been serious. Whether it will win against Ducati’s V2 remains to be seen. Maybe in the corners but TKR will need to come up with some magic to keep pace on the straightaways.
