R9 in 2025

It's gonna be interesting to see what Ducati does with the SSP bike as well. Rumors say V2 chassis with a Monster/Supersport engine at a "lower price". With a Monster SP at $16K I'm not optimistic

Brembo binders up front.

Hopefully the KYB suspenders will receive an existing drop in replacement.

Gotta ditch that big ol' honkin' toaster oven underneath.
I’m glad Yamaha is being honest that this isn’t what things use to be. But I’m not dumb enough to ride on the street, so this is a step in the wrong direction in my opinion. Hopefully Kramer is still making motorcycles for the track when I’m done with the R6.

“When it came to supersports from the early 2000s, it was all about the latest and greatest specifications,” says Aaron Bast, Senior Motorcycle Product Planner at Yamaha Motor. “There was a lot of performance being sold that the customer wasn’t ever going to use on the street. Now, there are a lot more rational choices and decisions being made, even within the supersport category. This is a bike that was designed for twisty two-lane roads, but at the same time is fully track capable,” says Bast.

"Track capable" is a benign term. Remember when the bridge at Summit Point was closed for repairs and everyone drove their truck/toy haulers on the track? Who knew a diesel truck pulling a trailer would be capable of driving on the track?!

Now, if you're going to mention "Competitive in X class", that's a whole other claim.

I'd love to see a bone stock R6 to R9 track comparison. Same rider.

It’s “fully” track capable, so that means it can go all the way around Summit.

R6 riders start getting away from me (MT-09) once upright on the straights. A faired R9 might delay the R6’ walk away for another hundred feet (the R9 has great torque to get out of the corners) but the R6 just makes better power higher in the rev range. The R9 is going to have its hands full next year in WSBK’s SSP class competing against different power bands.

It’ll be interesting to see if Strack Racing puts both their racers on the R9. My gut feel is they won’t.

I have mixed feels. On paper it's just about perfect. Everything I wanted it to be at the right price. But it's kind of ugly and boxy. I would have liked the winglets to be detachable and the body to be smoother. Will be interesting to see what the aftermarket does about exhausts too. Anyways I got a new bike so I will just watch this from the sidelines.

Speaking with a close friend that's a Yamaha dealer, he said they wouldn't be hitting the showroom until mid summer, that means aftermarket go fast parts in the winter. I'll stick with my r6 for now. The new Ktm 890 track only should wipe the floor with the r9 out of the box.

"more rational decisions and choices" aka lowering the performance bar and engineering compromises to lower cost of ownership for more potential customers. So business decisions...I get it.

On the street...it will be a great little bike....that will take $40,000 of development/parts/work to make a competitive platform in whatever class it's allowed to race in. Blake Davis/Emerson and Shiloh are an amazing team...Blake rode the R7 beyond it's potential and Emerson and Shiloh built that bike into an amazing package to compete with the Apes and other Twins Cup platforms.

KTM 890 track only? Is that going to be a thing? Different than the upcoming 990 RC R?
